Model Citizen: Illegal Mexican deported twice, returns to rape and settle down

Sometimes, just sometimes, I'd like to see how easy it would be to get a driver's license in North Carolina. I'm becoming callous to these stories because they're reported so frequently.

According to the Greensboro News and Record, Gilberto Cruz Hernandez of Mexico was caught and ousted from the United States twice, but was able to gain entry a third time, and secure employment with a printing company in North Carolina's Piedmont area.

Ironically, "the same federal government that twice deported him put its financial might behind a $123,000 Federal Housing Administration loan that allowed him to buy a brand-new house in Winston-Salem," the paper notes.

Oh, but it doesn't end there...

He was ticketed 11 times for speeding and other driving infractions, none of the stops resulted in his detention as an illegal alien, a prior deportee or a potential threat to public safety.

The UN Wipes Out Jewish State

Israel is no more. How do I know? The UN told me so. The United Nations held a "Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People" last week. A large map of “Palestine,” with Israel literally wiped off the map, featured prominently in the festivities.

Disappointed with Palestinian terrorists lack of progress, the UN opted to simply produce a new map instead of the traditional explosives carried on the backs of suicide missionaries. I imagine the UN leadership saw the printing press as a more effective use of resources.

It would be wrong of me to take credit from Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who last October said Israel "must be wiped off the map."

John Kerry Calls U.S. Soldiers Terrorists

These days Joe Lieberman may be the only prominent Democrat who isn't actively cheering for the enemy in the war on terror. As noted by Rush Limbaugh today, no one watches CBS' "Face The Nation," so this is news to most of us today.

Bob Schieffer says, "Democrat Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, he takes a very different view, Senator Kerry. He says basically that we should stay the course, because he says real progress is being made. He says, 'This is a war between 27 million Iraqis who want freedom and 10,000 terrorists.' He says we're in a watershed transformation. What about that?"

JOHN KERRY: I don't agree with that. But I think what we need to do is recognize what we all agree on, which is, you've got to begin to set benchmarks for accomplishment; you've got to begin to transfer authority to the Iraqis, and there is no reason, Bob, that young American soldiers need to be going into the homes of Iraqis in the dead of night, terrorizing kids and children, you know, women, breaking sort of the customs of the -- of -- of -- of -- historical customs, religious customs, whether you like it or not. Iraqis should be doing that.

Another Reason to Homeschool?

AP: Remember when a noun was defined as a person, place or thing? In a teen magazine that is becoming part of the Baltimore middle school reading curriculum, the noun is being redefined as "stuff."

That makes a verb "what stuff does."

It's part of a new approach in the Baltimore school system to teaching reading and writing in middle schools. Some say the new method doesn't have much of a track record. The change is being made after a dismal performance on state standardized tests this spring. The (Baltimore) Sun reported Sunday that officials have spent at least $2 million dollars on Studio Course. The curriculum uses teen magazines, places grammar on the back burner and lets kids write about whatever they want.

Here's my favorite part of the article -- Denver is the only other U.S. city that has used the program. Any testimonials? Sure! One 6th grade teacher had this to say:

"I can't imagine Baltimore would be so ignorant

to think it's research-based. They can look at our

test scores. Our test scores have not gone up.

The kids are getting shortchanged."

Clinton, in a March 24, 1999, Oval Office broadcast, explained his military action in Kosovo: "We act to prevent a wider war, to defuse a powder keg at the heart of Europe, that has exploded twice before in this century with catastrophic results. . . . By acting now, we are upholding our values, protecting our interests and advancing the cause of peace. . . . Ending this tragedy is a moral imperative. It is also important to America's national interests. . . . Do our interests in Kosovo justify the dangers to our armed forces? . . . I am convinced that the dangers of acting are far outweighed by the dangers of not acting -- dangerous to defenseless people and to our national interests. . . . I have a responsibility as president to deal with problems such as this before they do permanent harm to our national interests. Al-Zarqawi Threatens to Kill Jordan's King

From the AP:
An audiotape purportedly from the head of al-Qaida in Iraq said Friday the group's suicide bombers did not intend to bomb a Jordanian wedding party at an Amman hotel last week, killing about 30 people. The speaker on the tape, identified as Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, also threatened to kill Jordan's King Abdullah II and bomb more hotels and tourist sites.

"Your star is fading. You will not escape your fate, you descendant of traitors. We will be able to reach your head and chop it off," al- Zarqawi said, referring to the king.

Sounds sort of like the talk we'd hear from Bill Clinton's friends who were the victims of a sudden change in management over in Iraq a few years back.

Dear Associated Press, is this the same al-Qaida that has nothing to with Iraq (which has nothing to do with al-Qaida)?

This is such an irritating subject because conservatives allow themselves to be brow-beaten into accepting a lie -- specifically, that Joe McCarthy was the devil himself. Besides the McCarthy boost, it's also nice to read a column that exposes some hypocrisy in the beloved Edward R. Murrow.

This is unbelievable. Former president Bill Clinton praised Saddam Hussein's lieutenants and their underlings on Tuesday, saying they were mostly "good" and "decent" people." Read the Newsmax article here.

The AARP's Blurry Vision

Robert Samuelson of the Washington Post wrote a bold piece in today's paper. I say bold not because I totally agree with his position, but because he challenges the AARP on their home turf: the Washington Post. Here's the linky.

Conservatives have been saying for years that the powerful lobby group has very little to offer in the way of constructive improvements to retirement issues. They are simply a talking head of the Democratic party. Ask 9 out of 10 Boenaus -- most have sworn a solemn oath to prop up the Democratic machine without applying critical thought.

Here are the opening and closing paragraphs from the Compost:

Among AARP's 36 million members, there must be many decent people who benefit from the 5 to 50 percent discounts offered on car rentals, hotel rooms and airline tickets. But I won't be joining, because AARP has become America's most dangerous lobby. If left unchecked, its agenda will plunder our children and grandchildren. Massive outlays for the elderly threaten huge tax increases and other government spending. Both may weaken the economy and the social fabric. No thanks.

AARP's America is an illusion. Sooner or later, it will be overtaken by demographic and economic realities. The reluctance to begin refashioning benefits -- focusing more on the neediest and oldest Americans -- will compel more wrenching benefit cuts later. By their abruptness, these will be unfair. But even these cuts won't spare younger workers from higher taxes or cuts in other programs. Like autoworkers and steelworkers, we will learn that we could ignore the future but not avoid it.

This just in: The Associated Press reports the news!

In a stunning reversal of recent trends, the AP reports on some relevant news in the Middle East. According to this story about the recent Jordanian bombings, al-Qaida has a presence in Iraq! Here's an excerpt from the story:

As protesters in Jordan and elsewhere in the Arab world denounced the Jordanian-born leader of al-Qaida in Iraq, security forces snared a group of Iraqis for questioning and officials said one of the bombers spoke Iraqi-accented Arabic before he exploded his suicide belt in the Grand Hyatt Hotel.

The main demonstration in Amman lasted for more than an hour. But honking vehicles, decorated with Jordanian flags and posters of King Abdullah II, cruised Amman's streets until late in the night, as passengers chanted "Death to al-Zarqawi, the villain and the traitor!" and anti-terrorism slogans.

This despite the constant plea by Democrats to ignore any and all actions by al-Qaida in Iraq. Remember people, those pesky terrorists have nothing to do with Iraq...

Texas Voters Ban Gay Marriage

Despite claims by Democrats and their activist judges, Americans disapprove of gay marriage. Sadly, a host of politicians are afraid to speak up because of the media bullets that will fly. But in the end, aren't politicians supposed to represent the public?

As is typically the case, voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional ban on gay marriage. Texas is the 19th state to do this. 19th! Early returns showed 70% voting for the ban. I can't wait to see the spin in tomorrow's press.

VA: Tim Kaine defeats Jerry Kilgore

The press is reporting that Mark Warner protege Tim Kaine has defeated George Allen protege Jerry Kilgore.

I think it's fair to say Kaine owes it all to Warner's 70 percentish approval rating. In Virginia, a popular Governor will get his man elected to follow him. Warner, in turn, has a strong economy to thank for his approval ratings. The only thing worth noting that Warner accomplished in his term was increasing taxes after promising voters that he would not increase taxes.

Bush nominates Judge Samuel Alito for SCOTUS

Based on my reading so far, this is a nominee to fully support. Here is an excerpt from National Review on Alito's qualifications:

In selecting Third Circuit judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. for the Supreme Court, President Bush has made a truly outstanding nomination that deserves widespread acclaim. By any objective criteria, it is doubtful that there is anyone now or in recent decades (yes, not even Chief Justice Roberts) whose experience and qualifications better prepare him for the Supreme Court.

Judge Alito’s entire career since graduating from Yale Law School in the mid-1970s has been devoted to public service in the law. His range of experience dealing with difficult questions of federal law is unmatched. Bush to give lessons on how to lose your political base

What is it with Bush's "love me" approach to politics lately? On some issues, he's strong in the face of opposition. I'll never forget his resolve post-9/11. But social issues are making me crazy recently. The Washington Compost today ran a story on Harriet Miers' position on racial quotas. That's right fellow conservatives, Miers is a fan of discrimination, just like Bush's other friend - Alberto Gonzales.

Miers was a believer in mentoring programs, but during her tenure

she and the board of directors went further, passing a resolution

urging Texas law firms to set a goal of hiring one qualified minority

lawyer for every 10 new associates. The directors also reiterated

support for a policy of setting aside a specific number of seats on the

board for women and minorities.

"Those are quotas," said Roger Clegg, the general counsel for the

Center for Equal Opportunity, a conservative group opposed to

affirmative action. The fact that Miers "did not create the quota

systems but only perpetuated and endorsed it doesn't make it

less disturbing," he said.

The person who was the primary mover behind the policy that set

hiring goals for law firms was Gonzales, who at the time served

on the state bar board with Miers.

Appoint Miers: She may be pro-life, and she's a terrific bowler

Leave it to the NY Times to come up with a stellar piece of info on Harriet Miers. On the front page of Sunday's paper, they quote Joshua B. Bolten, director of the Office of Management and Budget: "'She is a very good bowler."

Ann Coulter is one of the few voices of reason in the conservative pundit community on the Miers front. In her column today, she focuses on the abortion issue. Will she vote against Roe v. Wade? Maybe. Who knows? Bush claims that he doesn't ask questions like that. But rest assured America, Harriet Miers is the common sense candidate. Bah. Here's an excerpt from Ms. Coulter:

It was "common sense" to allow married couples to buy contraception in Connecticut. That was a decision any randomly selected group of nine good bowlers might well have concurred with on the grounds that, "Well, it's just common sense, isn't it?"

But when the Supreme Court used common sense — rather than the text of the Constitution — to strike down Connecticut's law banning contraception, it opened the door to the Supreme Court rewriting all manner of state laws. By creating a nonspecific "right to privacy," Griswold v. Connecticut led like night into day to the famed "constitutional right" to stick a fork in a baby's head.

Dubya: Look, I'm a Conservative! Really!

Washington Times:

President Bush said yesterday that his goal is eventually to expel "every single" illegal alien from the United States as his administration pressed Congress to pass a guest-worker program.

Although conceding that the administration cannot immediately deport the estimated 11 million illegal aliens who are here, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao told Congress that a temporary-worker program would give aliens an incentive to come out of hiding and let them work legally for six years before being forced to return home.

Yawn. I guess this is news, because the President is making a statement on illegal immigration - a huge problem in our country - but his proposal is a joke. Bush is a smart guy, I don't doubt that. But why go public with such a nonsensical approach? Is it to woo conservatives who are busy bashing him over the Miers nomination?

This is so ridiculous, I don't know where to begin. Work programs will bring illegals out of hiding? They're already working here! Look at the day laborer site in Herndon that the Left is doing everything they can to protect. And if we can't force them back home now, what will happen in the next six years that will enable us to send them home later? Why won't they just go back into hiding?

"If an employer has a job that no American is willing to take, we need to find a way to fill that demand by matching willing employers with willing workers from foreign countries on a temporary and legal basis," [President Bush] said. That's a loaded proposition. I hear Asian kids work cheap, and can assemble a pretty good tennis shoe.

"I think it would be hugely, hugely difficult to do this," [Homeland Security Secretary] Chertoff said. "A lot of these people would not want to be deported. We would have to find them. That would be an enormous expenditure of effort and resources."

"We capture many more illegal immigrants than we can send home, especially non-Mexicans," [Bush] said. "And one of the biggest reasons for that is we don't have enough bed space in our detention facilities." Two comments. First, think of the terrorist implications. It's a piece of cake for Muslims to pour into our country. Second, beds are the issue? I'm pretty sure there's some extra room at the New Orleans Superdome. Why are we coddling these people when they're supposed to be on their way home?

To borrow from John Kerry: I voted to deport illegals, after I voted to import them.

Gun-Grabbing School Board (York, VA)

Meet Chad Szymecki, my new hero. The Hampton Roads Daily Press has been covering him for almost a week now, since he legally carried a handgun to a school board meeting. Waved it around like a madman? Took some hostages? No, that's the lib's fear because they don't have any real understanding of guns. You can feel the rattled nerves of the author when you read the original article.

Chad confirmed with law enforcement - ahead of time - that it was in fact legal for him to carry at the meeting. But we know liberals. To the Left, the only thing scarier than the 1st Amendment's protection of citizens to practice a religion is a scenario where a citizen may use the 2nd Amendment to protect the 1st!

But back to Chad... according to the DP,

the School Board is upset, so upset that it wants the state to change its laws. In a letter sent to several local legislators this week, the board asked them to consider amending the law to prohibit firearms at school board meetings regardless of whether they're held on school property.

"We're not infringing upon people's rights to bear arms," said board Chairman Mark Medford. "It's just a common-sense issue. We don't want to have weapons at our School Board meeting, because if someone decided to snap or got angry about a decision we make, we don't want the worst-case scenario."
Medford wrote: "Our concern is for the safety and well being of the students present at this school-related activity. Thankfully, nothing happened. But it would seem prudent to take action before a tragedy occurs."

Allow me to summarize Mr. Medford's position:

We, the York School Board, wish to infringe on your right to legally carry a firearm to future meetings. But please understand, we're not going to infringe on any of your rights. It's just that we don't trust the everyday law abiding citizens who purchase firearms. Only crazy people buy guns, and it's only a matter of time before Chad flips out and kills another parent over whose child gets which lunch hour.

Seriously, Mr. Medford. "Thankfully, nothing happened"?! The Left claims to not have a bias against gun owners, but this is the sort of bunk you run into every day with them.

Also, as far as Medford's quote about the "worst-case scenario", I'd say the worst-case is abolishing a personal liberty that was critical for this country's establishment.

KAINE vs. KILGORE

Comparison of the two candidates for VA Governor

First, it is interesting that Jerry Kilgore considers being a conservative a badge of honor. Tim Kaine knows it's dangerous to embrace liberalism. Although he used to proudly call himself a liberal, these days he wants to portray himself as a moderate who works well with both sides of the aisle. Poppycock. Check out the list below, courtesy of the official Kilgore web site. As is usually the case with liberals who want to hide their position, Kaine's official site doesn't provide a bullet-list comparison.

TAXES
Kilgore: anti-tax. openly opposes tax increases, a sentiment shared by VA voters - even in NOVA and Hampton Roads! [edit: recent comments by Kilgore make me think he's leaving himself some wiggle room. come on Jerry, tell me you won't allow new taxes under any conditions!]
Kaine: supported cutting the tax rate, but Richmond property taxes did not go down. he then supported the $1.4 billion tax increase (you won't find that on his web site).

GAS TAX
Kilgore: opposes
Kaine: loves it, as documented several times over the past year. his spin is that he is calling on oil companies to be "patriotic" and freeze prices. that's nice, but what if they don't? more taxes!

DEATH PENALTY
Kilgore: favors
Kaine: opposes. called for a moratorium. [edit: I don't buy his recent "I'm opposed, but I'll still pull the lever schtick for one second. he'll do everything in his power to let the crooks live.]

ABORTION
Kilgore: opposes. wants to ban late-term partial birth killings and supports parental consent laws. [edit: disturbing that he's okay with abortion under certain circumstances -- that's not hardcore pro-life, that's waffling.]
Kaine: typical liberal abortion-on-demand. he's the type who says "I don't like killing, but who am I to say you can't like killing?" he's now taking the Clinton approach of claiming to want abortion reductions without outlawing abortion. while running for Lt. Gov., Kaine was a staunch pro-abortion candidate.

GAY MARRIAGE
Kilgore: opposes along with civil unions. shocker, so does the rest of America!
Kaine: pro-civil union.

GUNS
Kilgore: supports right to bear arms.
Kaine: reading his web site, you'd think he was a true gun advocate. Project Exile was instituted before Kaine was mayor of Richmond. while mayor, Kaine used taxpayer dollars to send 8 charter buses to a gun control rally. he also looked for ways to sue gun manufacturers for the crimes of individual citizens.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION
Kilgore: opposes giving illegal immigrants drivers licenses and in-state college tuition. also opposes taxpayer funding for day laborer centers that don't check the legal status of the workers. don't misunderstand this issue -- illegal immigration is a real problem in this country that too few politicians are willing to tackle.
Kaine: supports burdening taxpayers with illegals, and is a strong supporter of Herndon's day labor site which encourages breaking immigration law in the name of freedom and privacy. hasn't spoken up on drivers licenses as far as I can tell.

Progressive Christianity: Highway to Hell

That's a bold statement, but I don't just throw it out for shock value. I'm stumbling across more and more misguided spiritualists in the blogosphere. I use the term "spiritualist" because many of them are not Christians - they're preaching a false gospel. Some out of ignorance, some because it's what feels right to a post-modern mind, and others because they simply hate the idea that Jesus was who He says He was and that absolute truth exists in the form of the Bible. If, when you die, you do not trust Jesus as the only means of salvation from the sinful state you were born into, then you will spend eternity in hell. It's that simple. Accept God's free gift of salvation, and you will be by his side for eternity.

I don't pretend to know the hearts of men. I don't know who God chose before time to be called His children. But I do know heresy when I hear it. Let me suggest something radical... instead of striving to find a niche theology that can easily be molded to fit any post-modernist walking the aisles of our local church, how about following theology as taught in the Bible. I mean, that's what we've got the written Word for, right?

The Presbyterian Church USA is no stranger to heresy (doctrine that clearly opposes the Bible). No, they can't identify it as such -- they'll embrace it as gospel. That's what led to the creation of the Presbyterian Church in America. Here is my latest "Progressive Christian" blog encounter: Pomomusings. Run by a seminary student at Princeton Theological Seminary. There is an ongoing discussion about Prog Chr. on his site, and some of his thoughts (and other blogger comments) are just maddening. The American church community has fallen so far that we rarely use SCRIPTURE as evidence for an argument.

Anyway, Pomo is a member of The Center for Progressive Christians, who have assembled a list of 8 points summarizing Prog Chr. (Ironically, they haven't been updated since 2003.) I feel the urge to comment on the 8 points. It's late, so I'll do this in doses.

(1) Have found an approach to God through the life and teachings of Jesus. Sounds wonderful. Nothing progressive about that. Christian literally means "of Christ." But what are the implications of mankind finding an approach? Are we capable of any good on our own? No. We're hopelessly lost in sin without the redeeming blood of Christ.

(2) Recognize the faithfulness of other people who have other names for the way to God's realm, and acknowledge that their ways are true for them, as our ways are true for us. Cue up the AC/DC, because statements like this are the path to damnation. Sure, Islam held "truth" for the 9/11 hijackers who slaughtered thousands of Americans, but it wasn't the truth taught by the God of the Bible. Doesn't matter what you call your own god, if he's not the true God, you're preaching a false gospel - and worse - giving a false hope to people lost in sin. One commenter on Pomo's site, Vic3, gave an excellent summary. Or, just read John 3:16 and John 14:6.

Harriet Miers to Supreme Court? Bad idea, Mr. Bush

I don't like this pick one bit, and all my reasons have been repeatedly expressed by other conservatives. Why on earth is President Bush rolling the dice with his SCOTUS nominee when there are so many known conservatives out there? We don't know a lot about this woman. That doesn't mean she's pure evil, but now is a perfect time to fight the liberals on Court issues.

1. GOP has the Presidency, House, and Senate. But they still act like a bunch of pansies. Show some spine! This country supports a generally conservative way of life -- that's not speculation, that's observation of voting trends and voter initiatives.

2. Her resume. Let's face it, it's not stellar. Everyone inside the beltway had a "list" with conservative intellectuals like Antonin Scalia, and as Ann Coulter recently said, Miers is probably best suited to be general counsel for the Post Office.

3. Is Bush using this selection as an intentional swipe at his conservative base? Is he still angry that we didn't want a mediocre candidate like Al Gonzalez, so he gives us an even blander pick in Miers? At this point, I think this is a serious possibility. Bush acts like a defeated man, and it's going to hurt this country's future.
